Round off your Scottish wedding with a ceilidh

No respectable Scottish wedding is complete without a rousing ceilidh to finish the night. Pronounced “kay-lee”, ceilidh is the Gaelic name for an evening of traditional Scottish dancing. Everyone who attends the party kicks up their heels and joins in the merriment.

Jennie’s quick wedding planning tip No 8: A ceilidh gives your wedding a truly Scottish flavour.

Get ready to “Strip The Willow”

Ceilidh dancing is a popular pastime in Scotland. From Berwick to John o’Groats, a night on the town always includes at least a short dose of Scottish reeling at some point during the evening. Cast your mind back to the kilts flying in the film “Four Weddings and a Funeral” and you’ve got the picture.

Don’t worry if you’ve never done it before, the ceilidh band will bring a dance-caller who will come down onto the dancefloor and show you what to do. You can be sure the caller will add the tried and tested Scottish favourites such as “Strip The Willow”, “The Dashing White Sergeant” and “The Gay Gordons” to the mix.

Ceilidh dancing is very energetic. If possible, it’s best to divide the ceilidh into two separate sections. Start the evening with a good set of reeling, followed by the buffet. Suitably refreshed, your guests will then leap up, reinvigorated, for the second set of dancing.

Look for a Scottish ceilidh band in your area

Take a look at Hop Till You Drop wedding music agency: list of ceilidh bands . You’ll find plenty of different ceilidh bands to choose from. The musicians will be delighted to come and introduce a real taste of Scotland to your wedding.

Enliven your Scottish wedding theme with a traditional ceilidh.
